The Visitation Order was founded in 1610 in Annecy, France, a lovely canal-laced city nestled in the awesomely majestic Jura mountain range. Our Founders, St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal, had a vision for our Order which differed from existing contemplative orders in the church of the early seventeenth century.
In place of numerous external austerities, the founders of the Visitation invite us to an interior discipline where love has a paramount place. This love is to be expressed primarily through the practice of two virtues: humility and gentleness; the humility of Mary's "Magnificat" and the gentleness of the heart of Jesus. We live this charism in community and nurture it through our life of contemplative prayer. Our ministries spring from our life of prayer and are enriched by the charism which we live in community.
