The first Monastery of the Visitation was founded June 6, 1610 in Annecy, France by St. Jane de Chantal and St. Francis de Sales. The order has expanded into many countries and had its early beginnings in the United States in 1799.

In 1989 several American Visitation communities provided for the foundation of the Vistation of Minneapolis as a way of expressing the Sisters' contemplative vocation in a new way: a commitment to live, pray and be among those who are often marginalized in society.

In 1994 the Visitation Sisters of Minneapolis founded a lay community, the VISITATION NEIGHBORS to help extend the ministry of presence in North Minneapolis.

Our ministry is to LIVE JESUS in community
In our urban monastery we choose to reach out in a special way ...

1. to companion those who are impoverished and lonely – those living on the fringes of society.

2. to support those committed to a minstry of peace and justice by sharing our Salesian spirituality with them.

3. to educate and network with those who in being materially secure, seek ways of growing in faith, hope and love by bridging with people in our multi-cultural community.

4. to provide spiritual formation for the VISITATION NEIGHBORS.
